Fixed and Removable Retainers

Once your braces have been removed, the best way to keep your healthy, new beautiful smile is by wearing a retainer.

A retainer is an orthodontic appliance which has been designed to keep your teeth where your braces have moved them to. When braces are removed, the teeth have a tendency to want to return back to their original positions. Retainers prevent this from happening and are key to maintaining the success of your orthodontic treatment.

With recent developments in materials, there are a variety of retainers. Some are removable and some are fixed and can be used for both your upper and lower teeth.

Removable retainers can be made of wire and hard plastic (Hawley retainer) or entirely made from hard plastic (Essix retainer) and are made for the upper teeth and your lower teeth. The video to the top left, demonstrates the placement of an Essix removable retainer.

Fixed retainers are made from a wire, which is permanently cemented to the back of either your upper or lower teeth, as shown in the video to the top right.

With recent developments in materials, there are a variety of retainers. Some are removable and some are fixed. Most retainers for your upper teeth are made of wire and hard plastic and fit in the roof of your mouth. A retainer for your lower teeth can be removable or permanently cemented to the lower teeth.

Our specialist will provide you with the kind of retainer that best suits your lifestyle whilst maintaining the new position of your teeth. Your reward will be a lifetime of a healthy, beautiful smile.
