Why Patients Near To Chiswick Must Look After Their Teeth

September 20th, 2012

Teeth are extremely hard and durable, but they are breakable and you must take steps to look after them to prevent the onset of decay and damage. Eventually, teeth that are left to rot will come loose and fall out and this has implications for the aesthetics of the smile, as well as one’s ability to eat and speak.

Bacteria in the mouth

The mouth is a hot-bed for bacteria; some bacteria are always present in the mouth, but others are present only when you eat. They produce harmful plaque acids which attack the protective enamel surfaces of the teeth. It is important to remove bacteria from the mouth to prevent damage or harm to the teeth. Brushing and flossing are the most effective ways of keeping bacteria at bay. If bacteria are left to linger there is a real risk of decay and gum disease.

Oral hygiene routine

Your daily oral hygiene regime is very important. You should brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time, as well as flossing and rinsing with mouthwash on a regular basis. Most people brush in the morning and evening, but some also like to brush after lunch, especially if they are prone to bad breath.

In addition to good oral hygiene it is important to see your dentist on a regular basis, so that they can check for warning signs of decay or gum disease. Visiting your dental hygienist once a year will also help to keep your teeth strong and healthy.

Poor oral and general health linked

Studies have indicated a link between poor oral health and poor general health, so preventing oral diseases is important. As well as brushing twice a day, flossing and attending regular dental checks, it is important to keep an eye on your diet. Eating sugary foods and drinking fizzy drinks and concentrated fruit juices can be very harmful for your teeth, so try to avoid these where possible, especially between meals. Drinking water or milk is preferable to fruit juice or soft drinks, and choosing sugar-free snacks and drinks will help to reduce the risk of disease and decay.

In recent years, consumption of fizzy drinks and sports drinks, which are laden with sugar, has increased significantly and this presents a real danger to oral health. Sugary drinks cause acid erosion that result in the protective enamel surfaces of the teeth becoming weaker, exposing the rest of the tooth to danger. Patients Near Chiswick Can Treat Tooth Infections With Root Canal Therapy

August 23rd, 2012

What is a root canal?

Each of our teeth is composed of the visible part above the gum, the nerves and other ‘pulp’ which is in the middle of the tooth, and the root underneath the gum. The nerves in each tooth come from the gum into the tooth through the root via root canals. Front teeth have a single root canal while molars (at the back of the mouth) can have three or four.

So why might I need root canal surgery?

Even if we take good care of our teeth, tooth decay and plaque can occasionally become more severe than we expect. If this continues and becomes more serious, it can even lead to tooth infection. When the pulp inside the tooth – which contains the nerve, blood vessels and other material – becomes infected, an abscess can form, which is a build-up of pus which causes the tooth to rise out of the gum slightly. This can be incredibly painful, making it difficult to eat and even leading to nausea. In addition, the infection could then spread to the rest of the gum via the nerve. Signs to watch for are persistent toothache, swollen or tender gums, a lingering bad taste in the mouth, or teeth that have darkened.

How can Sparkle Dental Boutique help?

Root canal treatment usually takes two visits. On the first, the space where the pulp is inside the tooth is usually cleaned, by the abscess being drained, the pulp being removed and the hollow space then being thoroughly cleaned. You will be given a temporary filling, which is removed on the second visit to be replaced by a permanent filling to help your tooth maintain its health and functionality. You may also need a crown to strengthen the tooth further. Root canal surgery sounds daunting, but this need not be the case at Sparkle Dental Boutique near Chiswick.

What can a Bridge do for Damaged, Broken Smiles in Chiswick?

July 17th, 2012

Tooth loss can occur at any age, whether due to accident, tooth decay or gum disease. Although there are many different causes of tooth loss the solution to the problem should always be to replace the missing tooth. A missing tooth gap can lead to a whole host of problems for patients in Chiswick and throughout the UK, including:

  • Tooth drift: This occurs when the surrounding teeth move into a new alignment, due to the missing area in the mouth. This causes the smile to look skewed and off balanced.
  • Gum disease and tooth decay: Because the gums are more exposed bacteria is able to penetrate them faster and more effectively, leading to gum disease and potentially tooth decay. This in turn makes the teeth surrounding the gap more susceptible to further tooth loss, which can then spread from tooth to tooth.
  • Difficulties eating and speaking: If a missing tooth gap is left and misalignment and further decay occurs this can affect the bite of your teeth, which will making eating and speaking a great deal more difficult.
  • Appearance and self-esteem issues: A damaged smile can also cause much emotional distress, with many tooth loss sufferers covering their mouths when they smile or laugh.

What is a dental bridge and how can it help restore my smile?

A dental bridge uses the surrounding teeth to stabilise a false tooth and hold it in place. A bridge can come in three forms:

1)   Traditional bridge: This uses the teeth on either side of the gap to hold the false tooth in place. Crowns are added to the two teeth, which hold your new tooth in place.

2)   Cantilever bridge: This type of bridge is used when only the teeth on one side of the tooth is healthy and so crowns are only added to the healthy side.

3)   Maryland bridge: This form of bridge is used to replace the front teeth and uses metal bands attached to the surrounding teeth rather than crowns.

Diamond White Smiles on the Queen’s Jubilee with Home Whitening for Patients Near Chiswick

June 5th, 2012

Everyone wants to have a beautiful smile and this includes have clean, white teeth. With the Queen’s Jubilee fast approaching and a long weekend of parties and fun you will want to look your best. Tooth whitening is one of our most popular procedures, and is a popular treatment for patients near Chiswick and across the UK.

The limelight trend for perfect, white teeth has infected the nation and with a combination of treatments anyone can have their dream smile. In order to determine an appropriate treatment plan we will need to see you for an initial consultation. This is where we can assess the current state of your teeth and discuss the options open to you.

Zoom2 teeth whitening

The simplest option is of course tooth whitening which can be done in the office or in the comfort of your own home. Philips has created the new Zoom2 technology, which allows you to get the whitest and brightest smile in as little as two weeks. Because tooth whitening can cause sensitivity it is recommended to limit the number of in office appointments to 2 or 3. However the whole process can be easily done at home over a two week period.

A combination of both in office and at home whitening is proving a popular choice. This allows you the chance to get the instant whitening effects from the in office treatment while following it up at home with a more gradual treatment. An initial treatment in the office can lighten teeth anywhere from 5 to 10 shades and by combining this with the home whitening treatment you can achieve a dazzling white smile in only a couple of weeks.

What is the Zoom2 whitening process?

The in office process is very simple and usually only takes around and hour to complete. The Zoom2 tooth whitening gel is applied to the teeth and the teeth are then exposed to a special light. The light helps to activate and speed up the bleaching process hence giving dramatic results in a single session. A five minute fluoride treatment is done at the end of the whitening to help strengthen and protect the teeth.

If you wish to opt for home whitening or a combination of both the process is just as simple. We will take an impression of your teeth and have a custom tooth tray made. Once this is done we will provide you with the whitening gel and tray along with detail instructions on how to carry out the treatment at home. If you are using the home kit as a top up to an in office treatment then you will need to wear the tooth trays for around an hour a day. If the entire process is to be done at home then the trays can be inserted at night and left while you sleep.

If you want to get the white, bright teeth of your dreams then simply make an appointment at one of our centres to discuss tooth whitening and see what it can do for you.

Get New Teeth in a (May) Day with All on 4 Dental Implants for Patients from Chiswick this May Bank Holiday

May 7th, 2012

Suffering from lost teeth or wobbly dentures can leave patients from Chiswick with a headache and a severe lack of confidence. No one wants to spend lots of time at the dentist having treatment after treatment, wondering when it’s ever going to end. Well, now patients have the option of the innovative All on 4 treatment, which is a fantastic, fast way of replacing lost teeth that then remain firmly in the mouth.

Dentures can be an absolute nightmare, ill-fitting, loose and giving you difficulty going about your normal everyday life such as when eating, speaking and drinking, however, with All on 4 treatment these problems will be a thing of the past.

How does All on 4 treatment work?

Using All on 4 means you will no longer have to use denture adhesives, as your new teeth will be permanent, non moving teeth like a set of natural teeth. A whole arch of permanent teeth can be achieved using this innovative technology, so that a denture or bridge can be fixed stably into place in just one day using 4 dental implants.

Benefits

It used to take a long time to have a dental implant procedure, with restorative fixtures such as dentures and bridges fitted into place months after the initial treatment was completed. Often the procedure would also require bone grafting to increase bone density and make the jaw suitable for treatment. The All on 4 treatment can be completed with a restorative attached in just one day, as it uses four specially angled implants to fully support dentures without the need for months of healing time.

After the procedure you will be free to eat any of the foods you love but used to avoid because of your dentures. Loose dentures can often cause speech problems, which can lead to a lack of confidence interacting with people. However, with the All on 4 treatment your speech can return to normal and your confidence will be restored.

You will then be left with a beautiful set of teeth and a confident smile, ready to eat, drink and socialise whenever you like. Speak to a Sparkle Dental Boutique dentist now for more details.

Patients from Chiswick celebrate William Shakespeare Day at Sparkle Dental Boutique

April 26th, 2012

In Much Ado About Nothing there is a quote that says, “There was never yet philosopher that could endure the toothache patiently.” On a basic level this means that, although philosophers spend a lot of their time engaged in intellectual thought, if they get toothache they’ll still whinge as much as the next person. That’s understandable really – toothache is a real pain for thousands of people, philosophers or otherwise. On William Shakespeare Day, now been and gone, patients needn’t have endured toothache patiently – patients from Chiswick and further afield can visit the dentist for a solution.

Root canal treatment is a procedure that can relieve tooth pain and potentially save your teeth. Each of your teeth has one or more “canals” that run from the root to the tip. These are filled with pulp consisting of nerves and blood vessels. If the tooth enamel decays for any reason, it can leave the sensitive canals exposed and they can become infected. This is a cause of toothache and needs to be assessed by your dentist. The alternative could be losing a tooth.

If you require root canal treatment the procedure begins with your dentist drilling into the tooth to access the infected pulp. Patients will not feel any pain as local anaesthetic will be used. The infected pulp is carefully removed and the dentist will then put an antiseptic solution into the canal to ensure all bacteria is removed. The tooth will then be filled with dental putty to stop bacteria from returning, and a crown will eventually be put on the tooth to seal it.

The whole procedure is relatively simple and completely painless. Some moderate discomfort can be expected when the anaesthetic wears off, but this can be combated with painkillers. The success rate of this procedure is high, but if you have any doubts please speak to our and we will be happy to assist.

Cawl for Good Oral Health in Chiswick on Saint David’s Day

March 1st, 2012

St David is considered the patron saint of Wales, and St David’s Day is celebrated as a Welsh feast, usually around the 1st of March, when St David is thought to have died. A founding patron of the Celtic monastic community based at Glyn Rhosin, St David signifies the Welsh resistance to the Anglo-Saxon Normans. Those in opposition to such Welsh nationalism sometimes launch counter-celebrations on the day. Celebrations, such as St David’s Day, can be used to raise awareness about good oral and overall health, particularly in places like Wales, where the risk of oral infection and disease is higher among children.

Celebrating St David’s Day

If you wish to celebrate St David’s Day, you can do so through wearing a daffodil or a leek, and by performing Celtic poetry and song. Typical clothing to wear on St David’s Day includes a woollen skirt and shawl and a white top. Some wear a Welsh hat too, which resembles a black pilgrim or top hat and many fly the flag of St David from windows and roof tops. Another way to celebrate St David’s Day is by eating good food!

Cawl promotes Good Oral Health

A favourite food to celebrate St David’s Day is Cawl, a soupy broth made of cubed meat (any) and vegetables like leeks, celery, onion, turnip, parsnip, swede, carrots and potatoes. The meal can be served with cheese and bread if you fancy too.

Cawl is healthy balanced food full of antioxidants that raise the body’s immunity, preventing oral and physical diseases from setting in. Antioxidants also help prevent tooth decay and infection. Not only is such a nutritious diet healthy for the body, but it also improves mental well-being and is known to positively change a person’s outlook when persevering through ill health and challenges.

A report in October 2011 indicated that children in Wales are at high risk of tooth decay. Oral health can be improved and tooth decay prevented through:

  • Balanced nutrition, such as health meals like Cawl.
  • Brushing and flossing teeth daily.
  • Regular visits to the dentist or mobile dental units for check-ups.
  • Water fluoridation.

Sparkle Dental Boutique, serving patients from Chiswick, wishes you a happy St David’s Day.

Taking Care of the Mortal Body Thanks to Chiswick serving Dentists

February 23rd, 2012

The season of lent begins with ashes. On Ash Wednesday we remember the journey that Jesus took while he was on this earth. Not only did he bear physical pain by fasting for forty days, but he also died a brutal death by the Romans later. Ash Wednesday reminds us of our mortality. It reminds that our body is not eternal and is subject to wear and tear.

As we grow old all of our body parts require extra care. As long as we live we eat, which implies that teeth are one of the most used parts of our body. Also, due to inadequate care they can be most affected due to ageing. Teeth not only help us with eating but also play an important role with our speech. Taking care of our teeth in the best possible way will allow us to use them longer.

Visiting a dental hygienist serving patients from Chiswick can make your personal dental care highly effective. You can receive preventive treatments in order to avoid possible dental conditions. Even though you might be taking proper care of your teeth, there might be certain things that you are missing or doing wrong. Visiting a hygienist can help you with that.

If you are continuously having bad breath, then you can benefit from fresh breath clinic, which aims at eliminating bad breath. Bad breath is a very embarrassing problem and generally none would like to talk about it. This is not an incurable problem and can be fixed with the help of hygiene therapies and specially created products.

Issues with the gums can be addressed by periodontal therapy. The therapy is designed to get rid of infections around the gums and bones that secure and support the teeth. Periodontal diseases can not only cause tooth loss, but can also be an indicator of other chronic diseases, such as diabetes, strokes, increased risk during pregnancy, cardiovascular disease and bacterial pneumonia. This is why it is important to consult your dentist as soon you find something wrong with your gums.

Invisible Braces are Available at Dentists serving Patients from Chiswick

February 9th, 2012

In the bad old days, if you were told that you needed orthodontic work from a dentist serving patients in Chiswick, you only had one option when it came time to choose your braces; namely metal “train tracks.” Unsurprisingly both teenagers and adults hated wearing these uncomfortable and unattractive braces and dental experts set about designing a more modern approach to orthodontics, which would give patients the smile they had always dreamed of – without making them embarrassed to open their mouths during treatment.

The dental world has done a great job over the last decade, with several different types of braces now available that are either virtually invisible or designed specifically to blend in with your natural teeth colour. One of the most widely used is the popular Invisalign brand, which uses a series of ever-tighter clear plastic aligners to pull teeth into the required position. Invisalign has even launched its own sub-brands, such as Invisalign Teen which can help the orthodontist to monitor how long the patient is wearing their braces, as well as Invisalign Lite for minor cosmetic corrections that will only take a few weeks or months to correct.

Simpli5 is another clear aligner brand which has developed its own style of plastic braces, also used for patients with minor orthodontic problems. Like the Invisalign aligners, Simpli5 retainers can be removed for eating, cleaning teeth and even for special occasions; although patients should remember that the more time their braces spend out of their mouth, the longer the treatment will take.

Lingual braces actually look a little like the old “train tracks” when they are outside of the mouth, but as they are actually fitted to the backs of the teeth, they are as good as invisible when the patient is talking, eating and smiling. These braces are often more appropriate than plastic aligners for those with serious orthodontic problems. All of these invisible or hidden style braces are available at many dentists in Chiswick, perfect for patients who want to carry on looking their best while their braces are working hard making their teeth look even better.
