The importance of retainers after braces treatment at Acton dentists

January 9th, 2012

For many patients in Acton finally getting their braces removed can be an extremely exciting prospect. However, it is vital that patients have a full understanding of exactly how important the use of retainers is following treatment with braces.

To put it bluntly a retainer is imperative if a patient does not wish to have their teeth revert back to the state they were in before their treatment. This is because a person’s mouth and teeth are constantly shifting and if they are not kept in check with a retainer, they may slowly but surely move into a less than flattering position.

Although this may all sound daunting (especially if you thought you were finally rid of dental devices), retainers are absolutely nothing to be scared of. Many patients find it helpful to think of them as the ‘next stage’ in their brace treatment and are made a few weeks before the actual braces are removed, from a plastic mould of the patient’s teeth.

It is very important that a patient wears their retainer 7 days a week once they have had their braces removed. This cannot be stressed enough, as the first few months following the removal of braces are the most vital for realising how successful the treatment will be.

Eventually, a patient will be able to wear their retainer less and less during the daytime, until they are finally only required to wear it while they sleep.

Although patients might experience some mild irritation from their retainer, they are certainly not painful and will soon begin to feel comfortable and habitual. Patients can sleep soundly and will barely notice that they are wearing a retainer.

What Treatment Can You Have For Crooked Teeth at Your Kew Dentist?

October 13th, 2011

Various forms of crooked teeth are among the most common dental complaints heard of within Kew and the rest of the United Kingdom. Luckily, there are a myriad of ways in which your dentist is able to tackle the problem.

In order to assess which of these treatments is going to be best for your mouth it will be necessary to undergo an orthodontic assessment. This will help narrow down which of the treatments is right for you, as well as the best way to proceed.

Among the most popular methods of straightening teeth is with the use of braces and aligners.

Braces come in two kinds: removable and fixed. Removable braces, as you may have already guessed, can be taken out and are commonly made of plastic, with wire clips and springs in order to manipulate specific teeth. Fixed braces, on the other hand, cannot be removed from the mouth and are made with the use of small brackets fixed to the teeth using filling material, which are then joined together using wires. Nowadays there are a number of fixed brace options available to patients, which are incredibly subtle and barely noticeable.

Aligners are somewhat different to braces and are comprised of plastic moulds that fit over teeth in order to move them into position. They are usually changed for a new set every fortnight as the teeth change position and although they are removable they should be left in for at least 22 hours a day (removed only for eating/drinking/cleaning). As with braces, aligners have come a long way in style and design and can often be virtually undetectable on a person.

It is recommended that people tackle the problem of crooked teeth wherever possible, as it is proven that straight teeth are much easier to clean and are less susceptible to gum diseases and tooth decay.

Our Ealing dentist helps you understand at what age you can have braces

September 14th, 2011

When we think of braces the one thing that sticks in our minds is the sight of a school kid with a mouth full of metal. But, when is the best age to get braces? Is there a time during the life cycle of your teeth that makes them more susceptible to the movements of braces? Well, your Ealing dentist is here to tell you.

Once adult teeth have come through and finished growing, a healthy mouth of teeth is still able to be amended by braces. Unless affected by trauma or poor oral health, anytime is the best time to get braces.

While we still have our baby or milk teeth, dentists will generally not advise braces, except in extreme conditions such as exceptional overcrowding, and even then the best solution is likely to be to remove some of the teeth.

Why are children traditionally the only ones with braces?

It is true that most people believe braces to be something that are reserved for children with crooked teeth, but the main reason for this is the past unsightliness of braces and the fact that many adults simply chose to put up with their teeth.

But, with today’s advances in orthodontics braces are almost undetectable and are able to be removed for big social events, making them an excellent choice for adults.

Aligners

The most popular alternative to braces is aligners. These are removable braces that use hardly any materials, making it almost undetectable once in the mouth. Aligners such as Invisalign and the Inman Aligner are exceptionally popular because of the speed at which changes in tooth position can be seen and because of their cheapness and ease of use.

Braces can be worn by just about anyone. If you were worried about having a mouth full of metal in school to fix your teeth and have put up with the problem ever since, why continue?

With braces and aligners becoming more and more undetectable there are fewer reasons to put up with misaligned teeth.

Much needed advice for new dental students from your Chiswick dentist

September 6th, 2011

Dental and medical courses at universities are always highly intensive and will often involve four years of rigorous and intensive training that will likely make the student’s college course seem like a walk in the park. But before any would-be Chiswick dentists wanting to perform advanced treatment like braces start running to the hills, here are a number of tips and advice that will hopefully help you to hit the ground running when you start your course.

Don’t Fall Behind!

Most dental schools start courses in one of two ways, either increasing the work load gradually or immediately throwing students in at the deep end. Even with the gradual increase in work, the amount of studying expected is substantial and as such the old saying of starting as you mean to go on is more important than ever . Falling behind at the start could prove disastrous, as the increasing work load will make it harder and harder to catch up with the rest of the class.

Study, study, study

While it might seem obvious, the best way to come out of your course with a good grade is to make studying the primary concern during your time at university. Study will continue throughout your career, especially if you want to get to grips with the latest braces treatments. As said previously the four year course is exceptionally intensive, and while having free time to visit friends and family or simply relax is necessary, a large amount of your time outside of the lecture hall should be spent studying different materials. Make a note of the teaching methods of your lecturers and study how they teach (e.g. a lot of lecturers use heads up displays primarily, while other lectures will be heavily textbook orientated). Looking at past papers is also a sure fire way to prepare yourself as fully as you can.

Plan

While the course will demand a large chunk of your time and many social events may have to be missed, breaks and downtime are a must. Make a plan for when you’ll study, but make sure to give yourself time off and spend your breaks doing what you love.

Braces – without the train tracks

March 10th, 2011

Orthodontic treatment has come a long way in recent years, with lots of companies now
boasting pain-free treatment, with invisible braces.

In the bad old days, braces were huge metallic affairs that were painful to have tightened, cut the inside of your mouth and left ugly cement stains behind even when they were removed. It was worth all the hard work to have a nice, straight smile but wouldn’t it be great if there were braces out there that did the same job without all that pain and humiliation?

Invisalign braces are one of the many new orthodontic treatments that promise just that. They have so many benefits over the old “train-track” style metal braces that it’s difficult to keep track of them all! Invisalign are almost invisible, as they are made out of clear plastic rather than metal. This also makes them more comfortable as there are no sharp or rough edges in your mouth. You can even remove Invisalign braces when eating or brushing your teeth to keep your oral hygiene up to scratch during treatment. Some people have even been known to take out their braces for social events, but you shouldn’t do this too often or it will affect your treatment plan.

Unlike metal braces, which had to be tightened in regular and painful appointments at the orthodontist, the Invisalign system uses a series of plastic aligners, with each one replaced by the newer, tighter model when needed. This treatment is even quicker than the old school braces, taking on average just 9-18 months for the procedure to be completed, though this depends on how crooked your teeth are to begin with and how closely you follow the instructions about wearing the aligners.

These Invisalign braces can work on most of the common problems that have been treated by braces for decades, such as crooked or overcrowded teeth, gaps, overbite and under bite. They are proving particularly popular with teenagers, who are usually mortified to hear that they need braces, though adults who have noticed problems deteriorating as they grow older are also choosing Invisalign as they are less intrusive in the workplace and in their own social life. Obviously, they are more expensive than the regular metal braces, but you’re getting a lot for that extra money – plus the treatment as a whole doesn’t take as long, so you can save yourself time and money on appointments.

If you or your teenager have been told you need braces and you would like to see if Invisalign aligners would be suitable for you then speak to your local dentist in Hounslow for a consultation.

Anticipate problems before they start

March 7th, 2011

Often dentists can see that a small child is likely to have problems with their teeth in later life, unless some action is taken. This is where interceptive braces come in.

Having complicated orthodontic treatment carried out can be expensive and uncomfortable. Even with the best new types of braces available a teenager will have to attend regular appointments, follow the instructions from the orthodontist closely and put up with aligners and retainers for anything up to two years. Interceptive orthodontics aims to stop this treatment from ever becoming necessary by tackling the problems before they develop.

Young children attend regular dental check-ups every few months, to make sure their teeth are healthy and free from decay, but in some cases dentists may be able to see that the child is likely to develop problems with their teeth in the future; conditions such as overcrowding are obvious just from the size of the jaw and the layout of the baby teeth. If the dentist is able to take preventative measures, then the serious problem may never even develop; or at the very least is won’t be as serious and can be treated without resorting to long-term orthodontics.

Children between the ages of 5 and 10 are the ideal candidates for interceptive braces – when the adult teeth are starting to develop and the shape of their face is starting to settle. Unfortunately, a lot of children are never referred to orthodontists for this kind of treatment as their family dentist may not realise treatment is possible or fails to recognise cases in which it could be used. If you are concerned about the way your child’s teeth are developing, you could always ask for a referral to an orthodontist yourself or make an appointment at a local clinic. If you leave it up to the family dentist to notice a problem, it may then be too late to take preventative measures, leaving braces as the only option!

There are a number of items that can be used in preventative or interceptive orthodontics, but one of the most common is a device that is worn at night to help guide the emerging adult teeth into the correct places, keeping them straight and evenly-spaced. It can even create more space along the jaw, reducing overcrowding and correcting over and under bites before they even develop. OK, it’s not pleasant to have to give a small child a dental device to wear at night, but it’s perfectly safe and if it saves them (and you) from having to go through the stress and expense of braces later in life, then it is an option that is definitely worth exploring.

Fix front teeth crowding in a few weeks

March 4th, 2011

Not everyone needs major orthodontic work to smarten up their smile – and now there is a real alternative to lengthy treatment with fixed braces.

Having braces and orthodontic work can be expensive, time-consuming and uncomfortable. Yet braces aren’t always necessary to make a few cosmetic changes to crooked front teeth. Now there are products like the Inman Aligner, able to provide a real alternative to lengthy orthodontics.

How much of your smile do people really see? Unless you have an especially cheesy grin, it’s only going to be the front teeth. So if they’re crooked but the rest of your mouth is fine, or has only minor problems that don’t require fixing, the best thing to do is use an easy, comfortable and, most importantly, fast-acting product that only acts on the front teeth.

The Inman Aligners can be removed, like retainers, and uses thin metal brackets, springs and coils to gently but firmly move front teeth into a great smiling position. You only ever have one appliance, so it’s cheaper than long-term braces that need to be replaced and there are no annoying orthodontist appointments to schedule month after month. Best of all, your front teeth can be moved into position in a matter of weeks, not months, with most treatments complete after 6 to 16 weeks.

Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Of course, there are a few drawbacks, as with any medical procedure. Unlike other new orthodontic developments, the Inman Aligners are not invisible during the treatment, though they certainly are more discreet that old-fashioned braces. You might feel some discomfort after the appliance if first fitted, but in most people this settles down after a few days. The biggest problem is that this treatment isn’t suitable for everyone; if you have serious over-crowding, under or over bite problems or large gaps throughout your mouth, then the Inman Aligner just won’t be tough enough to tackle the work that needs to be done.

Patients have to be pretty motivated if they’re going to use Inman Aligners, as a lot of the success (and the speed of the treatment) depends on the patient following instructions. You can obviously take out the appliance for eating, brushing your teeth and for social occasions. But if you become tempted to take out the Aligner too often, then it won’t be able to do its job properly, and the treatment will last a lot longer than planned. So if your teen is pestering for you to get their teeth fixed, make sure they understand how much of the success of the treatment is down to their commitment!

Sparkle Dental are here to add a little ‘sparkle’ to your smile

Local dentist clinics in the Ealing area will be able to advise if the Inman Aligners are suitable for your problem and arrange a consultation with an orthodontist.

Brace yourself for a better smile

February 7th, 2011

Orthodontics isn’t just for teenagers any more – and they’re far more discreet than the train tracks of old!

When most of us think of orthodontics and braces – the range of devices used to fix crooked smiles or close gaps between teeth – we probably picture our teenage selves with a mouth full of metal, feeling miserable and uncomfortable. But modern innovations mean that not only are orthodontic treatments less painful and more effective, but some of the most popular styles are even invisible.

Whether they’re hidden behind the teeth or coloured to match the teeth, new types of braces like Invisalign may be a bit more expensive but the extra cash is worthwhile for the patient to feel better while undergoing treatment. After all, it can be difficult to persuade teens to do anything they don’t want to do, and most are so self conscious that just the idea of braces is terrifying. Show them the new models available at your dentist and you might just get them interested.

After all, a corrected smile is not just about cosmetic improvement. Crooked teeth or gaps, if left untreated, can cause problems with speech or eating as the situation deteriorates. In fact, more and more adults are starting to ask about braces; perhaps they too were frightened to have the treatment when they were young or they have now saved enough cash to have the new, innovative braces available at the surgery. Either way, it’s never too late to have corrective treatment on your teeth, especially if the crooked smile or gaps are causing you discomfort or even putting your oral health at risk.

The developments in orthodontics in recent years have been amazing. Not only are new braces less obtrusive, but they also work faster and more efficiently. Many styles are also removable, so you can pop them out while eating or if you have a big party to attend. Make sure you follow the instructions though, or all that hard work in the dentist’s chair will be for nothing.

Revolutionary braces called “6 Month Smiles” or “Short Term Orthodontics (STO’s)” in Chiswick are making new ground.

Both systems use conventional orthodontics in that they involve the use of brackets and wires to move teeth. However, what both give is an effective, conservative and reasonable treatment option for adult patients with misaligned teeth.

For those wanting to have an aesthetic smile in a reasonable amount of time – around six months, these braces can give you the results you are looking for. In simple words, this new technique focuses on addressing a patients cosmetic concerns with their upper eight or lower eight front teeth only. It does not correct any misalignments of the back teeth.

Now you can gently, straighten and align your teeth in an average time of just six months. Take the first step towards improving your smile, your confidence and your life …
