New Year’s Resolution still going? Patients from Kew can still need a Helping Hand

March 29th, 2012

If you’ve made a New Year’s resolution and have managed to keep to it so far, the chances are that you’ve beaten most people who set out with good intentions for 2012. New Year is an ideal time to make promises to live a healthy lifestyle, cut back on smoking and take better care of your body, but sticking to the changes can be tricky, especially if you’ve chosen a pledge that is heavily dependent on willpower. Sparkle Dental Boutique, serving patients from Kew, hopes you keep up with the challenge.

In some cases, making resolutions can have a major impact on your life, as well as your health. Losing weight, for example, can boost your confidence and give you a new lease of life, as well as helping to reduce the risk of serious medical illnesses.

Oral health matters

Although you may not immediately link oral health with New Year’s resolutions, many of the changes people choose to make can be highly beneficial for the mouth. Quitting smoking is one of the most popular resolutions, but most people do it to cut down their risk of lung cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. Giving up smoking, however, can also be really good news for your teeth and gums. Smoking causes the teeth to become stained, making your smile look less attractive and potentially decreasing your confidence. Smoking also increases the risk of gum disease and slows the healing process.

Changes to your diet can also be advantageous for oral health. If you decide to switch to a healthy eating plan and cut down on sugary delights and fatty foods, not only will this help to decrease your risk of heart attacks and strokes, but it will also reduce the risk of oral health diseases, including gum disease and decay.

Why sticking to your resolutions is so important

There is always a great deal of hype surrounding resolutions and many people give up within hours. However, if you can stick to a resolution, especially one that spells good news for your health and wellbeing, this is a major plus. In terms of your oral health, giving up smoking, cutting down on sugary foods and adopting a good oral hygiene routine, will make a massive difference and with numerous studies confirming a link between poor oral health and a host of serious health conditions, from pneumonia and strokes, to heart attacks and diabetes, looking after your teeth and gums has never been so important.

Patients from Kew Even Out Their Smile for Spring

March 26th, 2012

This year’s Spring Equinox, the official end of winter in the UK, fell on March 20th, when we can waved goodbye to cold weather, icy roads and get ready for the fast-approaching summer months. Marking a point exactly between the longest day and shortest day of the year, this is also the ideal time to consider how to even out your own smile with some of the treatments available at Sparkle Dental.

Orthodontics at dentists serving patients from Kew may seem like the obvious way to get an even smile, with gaps filled and crooked teeth pulled back into place. There are dozens of options when it comes to modern orthodontics, including almost-invisible aligners, hidden metal braces and even short-term treatments for those who only need minor corrections to their front teeth. Whatever your needs when it comes to orthodontics and braces, the staff at Sparkle Dental will be able to advise which is the perfect product for you, to get the results that you crave.

However, some patients are perfectly happy with the position of their teeth, but dislike their gums. Many people think that, while teeth are easy to move, replace or improve cosmetically, if they have large gums that affect their confidence in their smile there is nothing that can be done.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. One of the latest dental treatments to make its way to the UK from the US – where even Hollywood stars are reported to have undergone the procedure – is the gum lift. Anyone who feels that their smile is more gum than teeth or that their gums overshadow particularly small teeth may benefit from this simple treatment, to transform their smile in time for the summer months.

The process is carried out using a small and very accurate laser that destroys the unwanted gum tissue safely and hygienically. Although patients may feel a little discomfort for a few days after their appointment, this should soon settle down to help even out your smile.

Sparkle Dental Boutique near Ealing Offers Hygiene Services

March 22nd, 2012

Most people are familiar with the fresh feeling brushing and flossing brings, but a trip to the dental hygienist can make all the difference to the health of one’s oral cavity. If you are looking for a private dentist near to Ealing to help with your oral health, or your NHS dentist is unable to see you, Sparkle Dental Boutique’s dental hygienist will be happy to see you.

Services on offer

We offer a range of services designed to cater for all patients. Hygiene treatment is an excellent means of preventing and treating oral health conditions, which is why a visit to the dental hygienist comes so highly recommended.

In addition to deep-cleaning treatments, which are designed to freshen the mouth, remove plaque and give your teeth a healthy, smooth glow, we offer periodontal therapy, air abrasion treatment for stained teeth and a handy fresh breath clinic.

Fresh breath

Bad breath is a common problem and is often linked to eating strong flavoured foods. But it can also be linked to an underlying dental condition. Bad breath can cause people to suffer from embarrassment and a lack of confidence, but the dental hygienist at Sparkle Dental Boutique can treat this effectively and will always be attentive of the patient’s needs. Our fresh breath clinic offers a combination of hygiene treatments and specially formulated products to tackle bad breath.

Periodontal therapy

Periodontal therapy treats periodontal disease, which is a serious gum condition that can grow worse if left untreated.  The scale and polish carried out during periodontal therapy helps to remove plaque and tartar, facilitating the process of healing and working to prevent further infection.

Air abrasion

Air abrasion is a revolutionary technique used to reduce staining on teeth. Stains caused by drinking coffee and smoking can be altered by this advanced technique. Air abrasion uses compressed air to channel aluminium oxide onto the teeth to remove staining and leave the teeth looking radiant and feeling smooth.

St Patrick’s Day Arrives – Sparkle Dental Boutique near to Ealing can Ensure your Hygiene Doesn’t go Astray

March 15th, 2012

March 17th has become one of the biggest worldwide festivals in recent years, with Irishmen and adopted Irishmen all over the world celebrating St Patrick’s Day. Many have taken this as an excuse to head to the pub and spend the day drinking, but there is much more to this important festival than pints of Guinness and just bear in mind if you do end up over-indulging on March 17th you could end up with more than just a hangover the next morning.

Many people in Ealing and across the UK don’t realise that alcohol can have a negative effect on their oral health. For a start, scientific studies have shown that those who drink and smoke regularly are more likely to develop mouth or throat cancer, a terrible disease which can often be fatal if it isn’t caught early. Luckily, dentists are all trained in spotting the first symptoms of the condition, so attending check-ups regularly could help keep you safe from cancer, amongst other oral illnesses.

Alcohol consumption can also increase the chance of developing conditions such as gum disease and tooth decay. Those who drink often are also unlikely to take very good care of their teeth, which only puts them more at risk. Obviously, there is nothing wrong with having a few drinks now and then, so long as you remember to brush your teeth, floss and use mouthwash when you get home from the pub…

If you are concerned that alcohol may have already damaged your oral health, you should make an appointment at Sparkle Dental as soon as possible to have your teeth and gums checked out by one of our team. They may recommend that you make a second appointment with one of the hygienists in the office, when you will have your teeth and gums thoroughly cleaned and polished, to boost your overall oral health and well-being.

Ignoring dental problems caused by alcohol in the hope that they will just go away is not the answer and can quickly transform a simple, easy-to-treat condition into a serious, painful and very expensive problem.

Why Not Treat Your Mum in Brentford to a Smile Makeover this Mother’s Day?

March 12th, 2012

If you’re desperate to show your mum just how grateful you are for all the years of love and support, why not splash out on the ultimate gift: a new smile. Flowers and chocolates are lovely, but if you really want to go the extra mile and spoil your mum this Mother’s day, a smile makeover is the ultimate gift.

Why choose a smile makeover?

A smile makeover is the crème de la crème of cosmetic dental treatments and with more and more people wishing they had a more attractive smile, your mum will be the envy of all her friends thanks to a brand new, dazzling smile. A smile makeover is not just a new smile, it’s a gift that keeps on giving, as a new set of pearly whites will boost your mum’s confidence and make her look and feel great. A smile makeover will be particularly well-received if your mum is conscious about her teeth and this affects the way she behaves around others.

A smile makeover involves a series of different cosmetic dental treatments and you can choose from a range of treatments based on the look you want to achieve and your problems areas. Popular treatments include tooth whitening, cosmetic bonding and orthodontic treatment.

How does the treatment work?

If you’re interested in a smile makeover you should arrange a consultation with Sparkle Dental Boutique, who provides treatment for patients from Brentford. During the consultation you can chat to your dentist about the areas of your smile you feel need improvement and they can recommend the best treatments based on the kind of results you are expecting and your current oral health status. Once you have decided which treatments you want, the treatment process can begin. The total time will depend on the individual, as some treatments take a lot longer than others.

Treat yourself!

If you’re a busy mum and you find that you are constantly looking after others, why not treat yourself and have a smile makeover? If you’re not happy with the way your smile looks, a smile makeover could be the perfect solution. In just a few weeks or months (depending on the treatments you choose), you could have a beautiful smile, which you won’t be able to resist showing off!

Spring Forward – Patients from Acton can get a New Smile in a Day at the Dentist

March 8th, 2012

Don’t forget that the clocks will go forward this month, meaning we lose an hour in bed but get to enjoy lighter evenings. Although it may feel like you are losing valuable time, it all evens itself out over the year when the clocks go back in the autumn, and besides many of the most popular dental treatments as Sparkle Dental need far less than a full day to complete!

Same Day Teeth at dentists serving patients from Acton are becoming ever more popular, as patients demand quick and convenient procedures without having to spend lots of time in the dentist’s chair. Of course, some dental treatments have only ever taken one appointment and everything from a good clean by the hygienist to cosmetic options like teeth whitening only need, on average, an hour of your time.

However, having more complicated and long-term treatments, such as dental implants, used to take up a lot of the patient’s time, as they were forced to turn up for several appointments over a short period in order to have the implants themselves fitted to the jaw, followed by the attachment of the carefully chosen and fitted false teeth.

The All on 4 dental implants, which are available at Sparkle Dental, cut down the amount of time you need to spend in dental appointments, reduce the number of holes you need to have drilled in your jaw to fit the implants and still produce the same fabulous results as other, longer dental implant procedures.

As the name suggests, if you choose the All on 4 procedure your false teeth are attached to just four implants, placed in strategically secure positions to guarantee that your false teeth will stay in place and look and feel natural. If you choose this quick and convenient option you should only need to attend the surgery twice. On your first visit scans, X-rays and measurements will be taken, while on the second you will have the implants fitted in the morning and the false teeth attached in the afternoon. What a great use of your shortened day and perfect timing to give you the smile you want just in time for summer.

The Pets of Hounslow are Barking Mad for Good Oral Health

March 6th, 2012

Crufts, the world’s most famous dog competition, is fast approaching and Sparkle Dental Boutique, which serves patients from Hounslow, believe that there is no better time to check your pet’s oral health to ensure their teeth and gums are healthy – we can’t help but a vet can!

Most people are aware that they need to clean their teeth twice a day and see a dentist on a regular basis to prevent oral health diseases. However, surveys reveal that most people are not so dedicated to their pet’s oral health and most are unaware that they need to take care of their pet’s teeth and gums.

Oral health problems

Statistics from animal charities and veterinary associations are worrying, as around 80% of cats and dogs over the age of 3 years old suffer from dental decay and gum disease, even though these diseases are preventable and curable if they are caught in time.

Signs to look out for in your pet include bad breath, avoiding eating or appearing to feel pain during eating, using only one side of the mouth to chew, pawing at their mouth and being quieter and more withdrawn than usual. It is also important to check the gums on a regular basis for signs of redness, inflammation or bleeding.

Treatment for oral health diseases

In most cases, dental diseases are largely preventable and they can be cured. However, if gum disease is allowed to develop and progress, it can be very difficult to treat and the teeth may become loose and eventually fall out. If periodontal disease becomes advanced, it can affect other organs, including the liver, heart and kidneys. If you notice symptoms and warning signs, including bleeding, swelling and redness, it is important to arrange to see your vet as soon as possible.

Preventing pet oral health diseases

To prevent oral health diseases, it is advisable to have a look at your pet’s gums and teeth on a regular basis. Look out for warning signs including redness, swelling, pain and bleeding and if your pet does have any of these symptoms, take them to the vet as soon as possible. Giving your pet chew sticks or hard biscuits will help to stimulate their gums, but try to avoid very hard foods, as these can cause damage to the teeth. Taking your pet to the vet for regular dental examinations (ideally every 6 months) will also help to keep oral health diseases at bay.

Eco Dentistry at Dentists Serving Kew “Connects Cultures” for Commonwealth Day

March 5th, 2012

Annually in the UK, Commonwealth Day follows a theme, such as “Health and Vitality” in 2006, “The Environment, Our Future” in 2008 and this past year’s “Women as Agents of Change”. In keeping with these themes, the 2012 theme will be “Connecting Cultures” to celebrate the Commonwealth of Nations and people of the world, enjoying their music, dance, faith, experiences and environments.

Observing Commonwealth Day

Although no uniform observance is followed across the world, Commonwealth Day is usually observed during March in the UK. A multi-faith service is held at Westminster Abbey and the Queen speaks to the world about Commonwealth Celebration, while the Union Flag flies from public buildings. The Queen’s Baton Relay is held on this day, started by the Queen giving the baton to a relay athlete to start the Games. This year, Commonwealth Day also celebrates the Queens’s 60-year milestone as UK Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth – Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. While not all countries observe this day as a public holiday or publicised celebration, it is an upheld joyous occasion of cultural celebration by individuals, groups, organisations and companies in the UK.

Eco Dentistry Connects Cultures

Dentists who practise Eco Dentistry unite with all to celebrate Commonwealth Day. Many dentists “go green” by educating patients about oral and overall health; using computerised patient records; reducing lighting, using disposable materials (including cups), reducing their water use; using digital X-rays and amalgam separation; avoiding the use of mercury; and preserving energy consumption by switch off all electrical equipment.

However, Eco Dentistry connects cultures best by meeting patient needs, giving them options and choices, which may include economical treatments abroad. Patients happy with their dental treatments, such as smile makeovers and facial rejuvenation, enjoy the benefits of beauty and confidence when meeting and engaging with others from all over the world. Eco Dentists contribute to the theme of this year’s Commonwealth Day by making the environment a healthier place to enjoy culture, where happy people can connect together in family, friendship and occupation.

Sparkle Dental Boutique, which provides treatment for patients from Kew, is all for eco living in all walks of life.

Cawl for Good Oral Health in Chiswick on Saint David’s Day

March 1st, 2012

St David is considered the patron saint of Wales, and St David’s Day is celebrated as a Welsh feast, usually around the 1st of March, when St David is thought to have died. A founding patron of the Celtic monastic community based at Glyn Rhosin, St David signifies the Welsh resistance to the Anglo-Saxon Normans. Those in opposition to such Welsh nationalism sometimes launch counter-celebrations on the day. Celebrations, such as St David’s Day, can be used to raise awareness about good oral and overall health, particularly in places like Wales, where the risk of oral infection and disease is higher among children.

Celebrating St David’s Day

If you wish to celebrate St David’s Day, you can do so through wearing a daffodil or a leek, and by performing Celtic poetry and song. Typical clothing to wear on St David’s Day includes a woollen skirt and shawl and a white top. Some wear a Welsh hat too, which resembles a black pilgrim or top hat and many fly the flag of St David from windows and roof tops. Another way to celebrate St David’s Day is by eating good food!

Cawl promotes Good Oral Health

A favourite food to celebrate St David’s Day is Cawl, a soupy broth made of cubed meat (any) and vegetables like leeks, celery, onion, turnip, parsnip, swede, carrots and potatoes. The meal can be served with cheese and bread if you fancy too.

Cawl is healthy balanced food full of antioxidants that raise the body’s immunity, preventing oral and physical diseases from setting in. Antioxidants also help prevent tooth decay and infection. Not only is such a nutritious diet healthy for the body, but it also improves mental well-being and is known to positively change a person’s outlook when persevering through ill health and challenges.

A report in October 2011 indicated that children in Wales are at high risk of tooth decay. Oral health can be improved and tooth decay prevented through:

  • Balanced nutrition, such as health meals like Cawl.
  • Brushing and flossing teeth daily.
  • Regular visits to the dentist or mobile dental units for check-ups.
  • Water fluoridation.

Sparkle Dental Boutique, serving patients from Chiswick, wishes you a happy St David’s Day.
