Invisalign – Life’s better clearer

June 30th, 2011

Clarity is a wonderful thing; everybody wants a clearer complexion, clearer conscience, clearer visibility on a rainy road – the list is endless. Clarity enhances perception, wipes away uncertainty and instils confidence.

The un-glamorous history of braces

Braces have been used for centuries to straighten out teeth and thankfully we’ve come a long way from the days of using small animal intestines to fix crooked teeth. The metal brace, introduced in the 1970’s, are responsible for successfully transforming smiles across the world.

Invisalign, however, is one step up.

A touch of magic

Invisalign braces are the equivalent of Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak but for the teeth. The revolutionary clear brace is less than 1mm thick and used to straighten teeth as an alternative to old fashioned metal brackets or wires. Gone are the days of anxiety and embarrassment caused by ugly, clunky metal train tracks glued to your teeth. No longer will you feel as though everyone’s eyes instantaneously bolt in the direction of your metallic mouth. No longer will you feel awkward, self-conscious and geeky. No longer will you feel like an extra from a 1970’s horror movie.

At last, you can sort out your teeth and smile without having to pay the price of severe psychological trauma.

Practical yet pleasing

Invisalign braces are not only clear and aesthetically pleasing, they are also practical. Unlike metal braces which are irrevocably cemented to the teeth, Invisalign braces can be removed whenever you want, affording you the rare flexibility to be brace-free for important upcoming events such as a wedding or graduation ceremony. Invisalign really gives you the freedom to be flexible.

Computer wizardry

The Invisalign treatment package is like nothing else. Your Invisalign specialist will begin by taking X-ray images of your teeth from which a series of 3D images are created. The intelligent technology creates a visual journey of your teeth and jaw throughout treatment and a set of retainers for each stage of the journey are formulated. This means that you will receive a batch of retainers that you should change every two to three weeks. Treatment takes 11 months on average which will be interspersed with visits to your orthodontist to check your progress.

If you’re in Hounslow today and would like a clearer solution to a stunning smile then consider yourself lucky for the gift of Invisalign and contact your dentist for further information.

A rising music star admits to having cosmetic dentistry

June 28th, 2011

One of the most popular dental heath treatments around, teeth whitening has been used by the stars of Hollywood for many years. Their on-screen performance is helped by their gnashers which are as white as they can possibly be. Even in the UK, this has become just as popular with secretaries, plumbers, writers and even singers with one very successful artist admitting this live on national television.

A star that exposed her life to the world

Her most recent single went to Number One in several countries which included the UK, New Zealand and France. Despite being in her early twenties, Jesse J appeared on BBC’s “Graham Norton Show” in February 2011 where she said, to the shock of the audience, that she had undergone teeth whitening treatment after her song Price Tag reached the coveted Number One spot in the UK. Jesse J was to the point when she did admit to this: “I got my teeth whitened. I really did though. You think I’m joking, I’m really not”.

Teeth whitening and what it is

This form of treatment is exactly what it says; applying product to your teeth over the course of a few minutes to longer forms of treatment which might need regular applications, teeth whitening has become one of the most popular forms of cosmetic dentistry around and has benefitted the lives of many such as those in Brentford. There is, however, one danger of teeth whitening and that is choosing the person or company to provide you with this service.

Be careful who you ask to help you

It is highly recommended that teeth whitening treatment is carried out by registered and trained professionals as they will be able to identify potential problems. Someone who has an untrained eye in providing teeth whitening treatment might not discover if someone has deep roots which could cause unbearable pain if teeth whitening formula was applied to this area. A person who is not trained in providing teeth whitening products might not notice that a person could be at risk of digesting the strips or gel which can cause a burning sensation to the stomach and cause further problems.

Have you been told you need bone grafting?

June 23rd, 2011

Bone grafting is a procedure which is used to increase bone tissue in one area by taking tissue from another area in the body or using animal tissue or synthetic materials to boost bone density. In dentistry, bone grafting is commonly used to support dental implants. There are different methods of bone grafting which can be used if the bone tissue is not dense enough to support an implant.

What does the bone grafting procedure involve?

There are different bone grafting methods; the four main methods include autografting, allografts, alloplastic grafts and xenografts.

Autografts involve bone tissue being taken from the human body. Bone is grafted from one area of the body to increase the density of the tissue in another area of the body. Commonly, with dental implants, bone is grafted from the hip or a different area of the mouth. Autografting is the most commonly used type of bone grafting, as the grafted bone is compatible with the new site.

Allografts use human bone but the bone tissue is taken from a donor; people can specify if they would like to donate their organs or tissue in the event that they die. Te body starts to convert the donor bone tissue into natural bone, which helps to boost the jaw bone tissue. Alloplastic grafts use synthetic material, which mimics the role of natural bone tissue. Xenografts use bone tissue from animals; the animal bone undergoes a special process to make it compatible with human tissue; over the course of time, the body replaces the animal tissue with natural human bone tissue.

Why is bone grafting needed?

In some cases, when an individual wants to have dental implants, they may have to undergo bone grafting to increase the amount of bone tissue in their jaw. In order for the implant to be successful, there must be enough bone tissue to support it. If this is not the case, your dentist may advise you to have a bone graft to boost the jawbone and enable it to support the new implant.

Dental implants have become the most popular means of replacing missing and damaged teeth and hundreds of people from all around the UK, from Warrington to Kew are opting for the treatment. In most cases, people have sufficient bone tissue to support an implant; however, in some cases, there is not enough bone tissue and a bone grafting procedure will be carried out to build up the jawbone or fill in areas where bone is brittle.

Get your smile in order with dental implants

June 21st, 2011

Most people agree that a missing tooth is not the most attractive feature and it is no surprise that dental implants – a treatment which replaces missing teeth – have become extremely popular in recent years. Dental implants are fine titanium rods, which are inserted into sockets in the jawbone. Once the implant has settled into the jawbone, a new crown can be attached and the tooth will look completely natural.

Why are dental implants so popular?

Dental implants have become very popular because they provide an extremely effective solution to the problem of missing or damaged teeth. Many people lose teeth, either as a result of an accident or injury, ageing or dental health problems, and dental implants look and function in exactly the same way as a natural tooth.

In the past, people with missing teeth were forced to choose between having a gap or dentures or a dental bridge. Many people are wary of dentures because they are associated with older people and most people still have the impression that they are uncomfortable and look unattractive. The design of dentures has come on in leaps and bounds over the course of the last decade and they are now more functional and more aesthetically pleasing than ever before. However, most people would still prefer to have dental implants because they function in the same way as a natural tooth, they do not require special care and they last longer.

Boosting your confidence

There has also been an increase in the importance of aesthetics. People are more concerned with the way they look than ever before and many people view their smile as their most important feature. It is perhaps unsurprising then that so many people are having cosmetic dental treatment to get a perfect, Hollywood-style smile. The glossy A-list smile is becoming more obtainable to everyone, as prices are more competitive and dentists are offering payment plans. More and more dentists, all around the country, from Acton to Wycombe are also offering cosmetic dental services in addition to general dental treatments.

Accidents can happen at any time; teeth are lost and damaged all the time and for some people having a gap in their smile in not an option; aside from the obvious aesthetic impact, gaps also create problems with speech and are not good for occlusion. Having a dental implant will help to create a natural, attractive smile and this can, in turn, boost confidence and increase self-esteem. If you have a gap in your teeth and it affecting the way you feel about yourself, arrange to see your dentist to chat about having a dental implant.

Age needn’t stop you from achieving your dream smile

June 16th, 2011

Most people associate braces with teenagers but the number of adults undergoing orthodontic treatment is increasing every year. Braces are designed to create a straight, attractive smile and people of all ages are now considering orthodontic treatment.

Why is orthodontic treatment becoming popular among adults?

In the past, most adults would never have even entertained the idea of having braces, but now there is a huge range of treatments available and they have become much more sophisticated and discreet over the years. Gone are the ugly metal fixed braces, in their place a whole host of innovative new devices. Now, there are all sorts of different treatments; some can produce amazing results in just a matter of weeks, while others use invisible braces so that nobody can see that you’re wearing braces. Popular treatments include 6 Month Smiles, which can create amazing smiles in just 6 months, Invisalign, which involves a series of invisible plastic aligners and the Inman aligner, which can produce incredible results in just 16 weeks.

A discreet level of treatment

The increased range of treatments has undoubtedly encouraged more people to have treatment. Now, you can have treatment without anyone even being able to see your braces. However, the increased popularity of treatment is also a result of celebrity culture and the increased impetus on beauty and aesthetics. Nowadays, people are more concerned with their physical appearance than ever before and most people regard their smile as their most important feature. For some people, having braces can literally change their lives because they end up with a great looking smile which boosts their confidence and increases their self-esteem.

Many of us have also been influenced by celebrities. The newspapers, magazines and TV channels are constantly filled with images and pictures of stars flaunting a perfect smile and this has inspired people all over the world, from Washington to Chiswick to consider having treatment.

The importance of wearing a retainer after braces treatment

June 14th, 2011

Orthodontic treatment can produce incredible results but, in almost all cases, it is important to wear a retainer after your course of treatment is complete. During the treatment process, you will wear braces or an orthodontic device, which will encourage your teeth to move into the desired position. By the end of your treatment, your teeth should have moved to the correct position and you should have a beautiful, straight smile. However, your teeth may start to move after treatment is complete and wearing a retainer can help to prevent this and keep your smile looking perfect. The amount of time you have to wear a retainer will depend on your orthodontic prescription. Your dentist will discuss this with you and talk to you about wearing the retainer during the treatment process.

In some cases, retainers may be recommended for people with minor orthodontic problems, where a fixed brace is not needed. Retainers are removable orthodontic devices, which must be worn for a certain period of time throughout the day and night. If retainers are not worn for the required amount of time, the teeth may start to move and slip out of place.

Are retainers uncomfortable?

Retainers may feel a little uncomfortable to begin with but you will soon get used to it and you should find it relatively comfortable after a few days. You can take your retainer out to eat and clean your teeth and you may not need to wear it all the time. Your dentist will advise you about when to wear your retainer. If you do suffer discomfort, arrange to see your dentist.

Why is orthodontic treatment so popular?

Orthodontic treatment is very common because many people suffer from orthodontic problems. Very few people naturally have a straight set of pearly whites and recently there has been an increase in the number of treatments available and this has encouraged people to have orthodontic treatment. In the past, only Ugly Betty-style bulky ‘traintrack’ braces were available. However, today there is a range of new, innovative treatments, which can move the teeth quickly and painlessly. There are even invisible braces, which mean you can get the smile you want without anyone even realising that you are wearing braces.

A patient from Chicago, who originally had some dubious dentistry in India had porcelain veneers placed on his upper teeth. The result was a less gummy smile with beautiful aesthetics.

A 9 year patient was punched in the face breaking both his nose and his upper front tooth. Using composite bonding, Sunita managed to replicate the tooth…so its as good as new!

Case 3

Its not uncommon for children to fall and break a front tooth. A thirteen year old girl did just that. Thirty minutes later the tooth was back to normal using composite bonding.

Case 4

The results of smoking can play havoc with your teeth and gums. This patient had heavily stained and discoloured teeth. Sessions with our hygienist followed by cosmetic dentistry using teeth whitening and porcelain veneers.

Air abrasion your troubles away

June 9th, 2011

Many people get very worried when it comes to dental visits. For some it’s the infamous (but largely untrue) reputation dentists have with painful procedures – although it will always come down to what level of treatment you have needed in the past. For others it’s the tension of waiting in the waiting room. And for others still it is simply the notorious sound of “the drill”. Once this has been turned on, some patients’ imaginations are enough to fill in the blanks.

What about air abrasion?

Some dentists, however, like those in the Ealing area, now use air abrasion as an alternative to the drill (known to dentists as the “handpiece”). Air abrasion works by blasting air at exceptional speed onto the target area, removing any decay from the tooth. Because of this, it is virtually silent when compared to the noise of the handpiece drill and, as such, has become a popular choice with many patients.

Another big plus air abrasion has is to those scared of needles as it is a minimally invasive treatment. The discomfort and invasive manner of the dentist drill can be forgotten with air abrasion, though of course any treatment is going to cause some manner of uneasiness. But with an experienced dentist carrying out the procedure there is no need to worry.

Sparkle Dental Boutique are here to add a little ‘sparkle’ to your smile

Air abrasion is one of many technological advances currently making waves in the dental arena. And, if the dentist drill is a step too far for you, then you should ask your dentist about the option of air abrasion to improve your oral health.
