Veneers – the fake – it answer to a perfect smile!

March 29th, 2011

If your teeth are looking a little tired and you would like to inject a little sparkle into your smile then veneers are the answer.

Veneers are to your teeth what falsies are to your fingernails and if you’re looking for a quick cover-up for those little flaws then look no further. Veneers are designed to fit like a glove and blend in with the rest of your teeth to keep the façade going. As you stroll through the streets of Brentford no one will ever know you’re faking it as long as you stay tight-lipped – but only metaphorically of course, it would be a shame not to flash that killer smile at every available opportunity.

Faking Perfection

There is no better head-turner than perfect pearly whites and the feeling that yours are not up to scratch can be a real embarrassment for some. If your teeth are chipped, worn, broken, stained, crooked or gappy, then veneers may be able to fix it. You can have the odd veneer or you can have an entire set and your teeth will look as good as new.

Within a couple of trips to the dentist your smile can be transformed from scrappy to sparkling and all those signs of wear and tear will disappear like magic. The procedure is relatively simple and although the screeching sounds of the dentist drill cannot be avoided on this one it is still relatively painless. Just as you would file your nails before applying the falsies, your teeth have to be prepped but this is probably the worst it gets with veneers – it’s no root canal and no cause for the dentist jitters!

There are a number of choices for you to make in choosing your veneers. You wouldn’t dye your hair without discussing it with your stylist and likewise you wouldn’t choose a veneer without going through your options with your dentist. The material you use will determine whether your veneer lasts just 1 year or 10 and discussing the right adjustments to make with your dentist will make sure the results are show-stopping.

Veneers are a fabulous solution for a broken smile and when done right the transformation can be astonishing. Speak to your dentist about veneers if you’re looking for a simple way to make your smile a fabulous one.

Don’t suffer with sweating

March 25th, 2011

Excessive sweating can be an embarrassing and uncomfortable condition, but now there is a solution – and you can even get the treatment at your dentist’s surgery!

For years, if you suffered from excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis to give the condition its technical name, you just had to put up with it – and spend a lot of money on – antiperspirant. The most common type of hyperhidrosis occurs on specific patches on the body, often the areas that sweat most anyway, such as the armpits, feet, hands and face. People who suffer from this condition can find themselves sweating in the affected areas as if they’ve just run a marathon, when they’re sitting quietly in the office.

As you can imagine, this isn’t just uncomfortable but can also be really embarrassing, forcing sufferers to avoid social situations and intimacy. Some people may even be too embarrassed to seek help from a medical professional, believing that there’s nothing that can be done; actually there are lots of different treatments that a doctor may recommend, but one of the simplest is now available at the dental surgery.

Botulinum toxin, or Botox as it is more commonly known, can be used to treat hyperhidrosis, although doctors will not usually prescribe it on the NHS until other methods have been tried and found to be unsuccessful. A private clinic is the best way to go about getting this treatment for your excessive sweating, if you are determined to do something about the condition and claim back your social life.

The Botox is administered into the affected area through a small needle which can be numbed with an anaesthetic cream, if you are worried about the pain. Each affected area will need to be injected about 12 times, with the procedure taking less than an hour; so you could be back at your desk, sweat-free, come the end of your lunch break. While Botox is normally used to smooth out wrinkles and provide non-surgical face lifts, in this case the toxin blocks the signals from the brain to the sweat glands, reducing, but not stopping completely, the amount of sweat your body produces.

After all, a little sweat is essential for us to regulate our body temperature, so no sweat would lead to worse medical conditions than hyperhidrosis!

If you suffer from excessive sweating and have struggled to find an effective treatment, talk to your dentist in the Brentford area to see if Botox would work for you.

Is Essential Dental Treatment Safe during Pregnancy?

March 22nd, 2011

In a recent article published in the June issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association, a study suggests that pregnant women can safely undergo essential dental treatment and receive topical and local anaesthetics at 13 to 21 weeks.

Researchers compared safety outcomes from the Obstetrics and Periodontal Therapy Trial in which pregnant women received scaling and root planing and essential dental treatment. The researchers randomly assigned 823 pregnant women with periodontitis to receive scaling and root planing either at 13 to 21 weeks’ gestation or up to 3 months after delivery. The researchers determined that 483 of these women also needed essential dental treatment. Three hundred and fifty one of the women completed all recommended treatment. Throughout the trial, obstetric nurses reviewed medical records to monitor subjects for serious adverse events. The results of the study showed that “periodontal treatment and essential dental treatment, administered at a time between 13 and 21 weeks’ gestation, did not significantly increase the risk of any adverse outcome evaluated. In addition the use of topical and local anaesthetics for scaling and root planing was not associated with an increased risk of experiencing adverse events and outcomes.

Hormonal changes during pregnancy sometimes cause gums to bleed more easily and this is why at Sparkle Dental Boutique close to Kew, we actively encourage patients who are pregnant to come for regular check ups. As a general rule, we do not take any x-rays during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary and leave the replacement of amalgam fillings until after the baby is born.

Smile makeovers from Acton

March 22nd, 2011

A smile makeover will ensure you have something to smile about

Many people find it horrific to think of what passed as dentistry in years gone by – In Victorian times the only forms of ‘dentistry’ were yanking rotted teeth out and (for the fortunate few who could afford it) false teeth, and these procedures were often performed by people who had no dentistry training in the slightest. Thankfully, we live in the 21st century and dentistry has come on leaps and bounds.

Many dental surgeries now offer a range of cosmetic dental treatments, including those in the area of Acton. Practices pride themselves on providing advanced cosmetic dental work such as teeth whitening, crowns, bridges, porcelain veneers and white fillings, as well as other procedures. A perfect smile is sought after by many and with the increase in interest for cosmetic dentistry over the last few years, these advanced dental surgeries have become more and more common.

Having an unattractive smile can be very harmful to a person’s self confidence and many are now turning to cosmetic dentistry for a smile makeover. Teeth whitening – as an example – has become very common because of the swiftness with which a change can be seen; with professional whitening (also known as in surgery whitening) a noticeable difference can often be seen by the time you’ve got home from the dentists.

In home whitening kits are also available for use at home and have begun to gain as much popularity as in surgery due to their relative cheapness; they are generally seen as producing the most noticeable result but take a lot longer to take effect. The use of dental bridges to replace a missing tooth and white fillings can even make a mouth with damaged or lost teeth something to show off with pride again.

Most dentists in Collindale offer smile makeovers which will ultimately combine a range of advanced dental treatments you would normally see.

Mastermind – Are You Ready for the Hot Seat

March 17th, 2011

mastermind-chair2.jpg

Dr Sunita Verma, Sparkle Dental Boutique has been asked to become an examiner for the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) accreditation process. This follows on from Sunita being the first and only woman in England to achieve accreditation.

The BACD is committed to promoting the practice of quality cosmetic dentistry, and has recently introduced credentials to allow its members to demonstrate that they have reached an agreed level of ability.

Candidates seeking accreditation will have to brave the `black chair’ as they answer questions on their specialist subject, their own previously submitted dental cases to be awarded the coveted accreditation.

Sunita from close to Ealing says “Sitting in the `black chair’ was a little daunting, as it had taken me a few years to submit and pass the 5 clinical cases that we had to anonymously submit. When these had all been passed there was a Viva examination where I answered questions from examiners about treatment methods chosen and materials that I had used.”

Sunita goes on to say “Examiners are usually drawn from BACD accredited members and so it is a great honour to have been asked to be an examiner. Although the programme Mastermind is well known for its challenging questions, intimidating setting and air of seriousness, I look forward to meeting with candidates whilst they are in the hot seat.”

Feeling old and a facelift phobe?

March 17th, 2011

When your age starts to show it can be disheartening to look in the mirror and see that young, fresh and radiant picture that once was all worn, tired and weary.

The truth of the matter is that it will happen to us all and most of us will grow old gracefully knowing that our one other option is the facelift … not anymore! How about having a tweakment? A tweakment is a non-surgical procedure using dermal fillers to plump up the skin, reversing the clock and restoring some of that lost youth. A few fillers can instantly transform your downturned mouth and sagging cheeks, restoring that radiant appearance you thought had been lost forever.

The power of the tweakment

With the addition of a few dermal fillers your face can look younger, fresher, fuller and more defined. If your laughter lines get you down or your less than luscious lips leave you feeling low, then a tweakment is what you need. It can take years off your face by reducing your wrinkles; plumping out those facial lines, restoring the volume to your lips and cheeks and restoring your face shape by defining the cheekbones or chin. Even better, all of this work will look more natural than a facelift and so rather than ending up with that
dreaded ‘surprised’ appearance, it will look pretty much the same but without the ‘gone south’ look.

The fillers used contain a substance called hyaluronic acid which is found naturally in the human body making it very safe. The treatment procedure may leave you, expectedly, feeling a little sore and there will be some bruising but those that have already braved it say the bruising subsides in 48 hours and the end results make it all worthwhile.

Nobody wants to grow old ‘ungracefully’ and for many the idea of a facelift signifies this very ungraceful fact. The tweakment offers the option of reversing those years without bringing your dignity into question. It is the best of both worlds – youth and dignity all restored and your self-confidence never faltering. You may only be treading the streets of Chiswick but it doesn’t mean you can’t look like you stepped straight out of LA!

Fear of the dentist could be a thing of the past

March 16th, 2011

Suffering from dental phobia can cause your oral health to suffer. But now there are lots of techniques and technologies to encourage the nervous patient into the dentist’s chair.

Fear of the dentist is one of the most common phobias out there, up at the top of the list with heights, spiders and the dark. Unlike the other three, which are probably at worst inconvenient, fear of the dentist can actually damage your health. Those affected are so afraid to get in the dentist’s chair that they will often suffer with toothache or bleeding gums for a long time, causing untold damage to their mouth, before finally seeking attention.

Dentists are starting to take steps to encourage these dental phobics to return. Most surgeries these days look nothing like a surgery, with a pleasant atmosphere, music playing, artwork on the walls etc. All this is intended to create a relaxing atmosphere so the phobic doesn’t feel stressed as soon as they walk in the door. New technologies are always being developed to try and make the experience less uncomfortable and more pleasant for the patient.

Serious cases may require some kind of therapy to overcome whatever trauma caused them to become so afraid of the dentist; usually a bad experience in their youth is involved. Some surgeries offer hypnotherapy to relax phobics during check-ups or procedures and if the patient has to undergo a longer, more complicated treatment, then they can always be sedated.

Naturally, this is not ideal and if another way to deal with the phobia, without resorting to drugs, can be found then this is better for both patient and dentist. A lot of dental phobics are children, who are probably more afraid of the unknown than anything that has actually happened to them! If your child appears nervous about an upcoming visit, talk to your dentist and ask if you can bring them in for a visit beforehand.

The child can meet the dentist without his scary mask, have the chair take them up and down and even hear the dreaded drilling noise, without it having negative connotations. The dentist can even show them all the gruesome looking tools he uses and explain what they are for, so there will be no nasty surprises on the day.

Could yours do with a wake up call?

March 14th, 2011

Brushing your teeth is probably not something you give much thought to in your day-to-day to do list – brushing morning and night is about as routine as the morning rush hour in Ealing… but are you doing it properly?

It’s easy to get lazy when it comes to your oral hygiene routine as it is something you repeat day after day after day. If, though, you’re one of those lazy people then it will not take long for the results of your shoddy work to show.

Bacteria and food debris left behind in your mouth as you go through the day takes just 24 hours to turn into harmful plaque bacteria which, when left to linger, can cause tooth decay, gum disease and acid erosion to name a few. Even worse, plaque takes a mere 72 hours to turn into tartar and tartar cannot be removed by any other means than a professional cleaning.

Time to give your routine a revamp?

If you spend 3 minutes morning and night brushing your teeth any way then you may as well be making the most of it. Ineffective brushing means ineffective results and a waste of your precious time. Brushing should take three minutes every time and should involve front, back, sides and everything in between – every surface of every tooth in your mouth should be cleaned and not forgetting your tongue!

The correct technique for brushing is to hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and, applying firm but gentle pressure, move back and forth in small circular motions. This is the best way to ensure that your gums and tooth enamel are not damaged. Many people will simply go manically back and forth in a scrubbing action (are you guilty?) but this is the way in which gums and tooth enamel are worn down and it is not even as effective a way of removing the plaque.

Your routine should never end there either! Flossing is just as important as brushing and should go hand-in-hand with your toothbrush. Brushing is only effective for the outer parts of the teeth but what about the bits you can’t see? Bacteria get everywhere and just because you can’t see it, it doesn’t mean it’s not there. At least once a day, preferably at night you should spend 5 minutes flossing to make sure that your mouth is absolutely 100% bacteria free.

Sparkle Dental are here to add a little ‘sparkle’ to your smile

An effective oral hygiene routine really doesn’t steal that much time away from your day. The numerous dentist visits that will come should you neglect your oral health, however, will be much more inconvenient. If you think your daily routine could probably do with a revamp then do it today and keep that smile sparkling.
