Pucker Up! Its National Kissing Day

June 27th, 2008

On 6th July its National Kissing Day, a time for you to pucker up and share some love.

Getting involved in National Kissing Day may be more beneficial than you realise. A kiss boosts the level of ‘happy hormone’ oxytocin and burns off approximately around 26 calories in a one minute smooch!

The question is does your kiss leave someone breathless or do you find people turning their cheek when you kiss them goodbye? Well it may be as a result of bad breath. Bad breath is a very common problem and there are many different causes – from eating strong smelling foods like garlic and onions to bacteria surrounding your teeth and gums. The more serious side of bad breath is that it acts as an early warning sign for gum disease.

If you do have bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth then you need to start a good oral hygiene routine, to keep your mouth clean and fresh. At Sparkle Dental Boutique, Ealing we look out for any areas of concern and we show you how to clean those difficult to reach areas to give you a confident healthy smile. After all a good kiss is more than just a kiss, it can be the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Business Smiles

June 19th, 2008

Business men are increasingly turning to dentists to help them with their smiles and seal important deals.

Dr Sunita Verma from Sparkle Dental Boutique, Chiswick says, “There has been a huge upsurge in men going for cosmetic beauty treatments in recent years. Having a beautiful smile is an extension of this with men wanting to look good and feel great. Traditionally, it was women who would take the appearance of their teeth more seriously, but now we find at Sparkle that men are just as concerned with the aesthetics of their smile as well as their dental health.”

Sunita says “A beautiful smile radiates confidence and projects an image about you. It not only boosts their confidence but reverses the aging process, as many patients have commented that their new smiles have made them look and feel years younger!”

32 Teeth Are Just Not Enough!

June 16th, 2008

Did you know that animals’ teeth are different depending upon what foods they eat?

Meat-eaters (carnivores) have sharp teeth.

Plant-eaters (herbivores) have flat teeth.

Animals that eat both plants and meat, like humans, have sharp teeth in front and flat teeth at the back.

Animal facts:

Sharks lose teeth each week. They get new teeth when they lose the old ones. They may have over 20,000 teeth in a lifetime.

Crocodiles have 60 teeth in their mouth at any one time and can grow up to 2-3,000 teeth during their lifetime.

Poisonous snakes have hollow fangs which eject poison.

Giraffes have 32 teeth, just like humans.

Elephants have four sets of teeth in their lifetime. Their tusks are the longest teeth in the world.

Dolphins have more teeth than any other animal. Some dolphins have over 200 teeth. Scientists can tell the age of a dolphin by the rings on their teeth.

Snowshoe rabbits fight with their teeth. Adult males, called bucks, fight one another with their teeth when they court the females or does.

Baleen whales don’t have teeth. Instead they have stiff, fringed plates, made of the same stuff as human hair and fingernails. They hang down from the upper jaw and trap small fish and other food.

Come to Sparkle Dental Boutique, Acton to see what your teeth can do for you.

Dental Tourism – Friend or Foe?

June 5th, 2008

Recent findings by Which confirm that cheap dental holidays pose serious risks.

Dr Sunita Verma from Sparkle Dental Boutique, Kew says `Everyone would like a beautiful smile and in order to get the smile of their dreams, people seem more prepared to risk damaging their teeth and smile by having cheap treatments abroad. Only a few weeks ago we saw a patient who went to India for a `smile makeover’. On landing back in the UK, one veneer had fallen off and another had cracked.

Broken veneers two days after being fitted!

Sunita says “The attractions of overseas dentistry are obvious – why not combine an enjoyable trip with cut price treatment? The problem of course, is what to do when things go wrong. To carry out cosmetic dental treatments requires skill, experience and an artistic eye. We need time to prepare and plan the treatment and rushing the dental treatment within a week long holiday is not in the interest of the patient. The other problem is the aftercare – travelling back for a post procedural check up is not an option for most people and then having to put right treatment that has gone wrong can also be expensive.”

Currently any qualified dentist can offer cosmetic dentistry in the UK, but finding an appropriately skilled cosmetic dentist is essential to ensure treatments are beautiful, natural looking and long term. The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) (www.bacd.com) is the largest and most active cosmetic dental academy in Europe promoting advancement and ethical delivery of cosmetic dentistry.

“I’ve been a full member of the BACD for a number of years and my patients can be safe in the knowledge that my team and I keep up to date with the latest techniques and technologies. We are committed to training and undertake continuous professional development activities”.

Sunita concludes, “If the volume of health tourism increases, I am sure we will see greater numbers of disappointed patients booking once again.”
